Mosquitoes and Noseeums

  • “Mozzies” are prevalent in warm, humid climates, particularly during late afternoon and into the evening. When walking on the beaches or in grass ashore, sandflies (or ‘noseeums’) can be particularly irritating.

  • Generally only an issue once onshore, no problems while on the boats.

  • Zika, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya can be contracted through mozzie bites.

  • There is no malaria risk in Spain.

  • You are the best judge of your susceptibility to bug bites.  Those of you who seem to be a tasty treat for the little buggers should plan accordingly.

    • Wear long, thin sleeves and pants if possible.

    • Pack a suitable anti-mosquito spray or lotion.  Higher strengths of Deet and Picaridin are particularly effective, and some brands offer a Permethrin solution to wash or spray your clothes with prior to the trip, which offers excellent protection.
